Peace Research & Advocacy Institute (SMC-Private) Limited is an independent and nonpartisan research organization based in Islamabad. The Institute studies the phenomena of terrorism and violent extremism and political and religious conflicts that impact domestic and regional security.

Terrorism continues to be a global security challenge despite international efforts to contain it. Pakistan has been one of the worst affected countries for nearly two decades now. As per the Pakistan Economic Survey 2017 estimates, more than 60,000 Pakistanis lost their lives in the war against terrorism from 2001 to 2017 and the country’s economy suffered financial losses of over $100 billion.

The Peace Research & Advocacy Institute (SMC-Private) Limited seeks to research critical questions about peace and security in Pakistan and the larger region. It offers research-based policy recommendations for achieving peace and preventing violence. The Institute studies the following areas:

  • Religious minorities


The Peace Research & Advocacy Institute envisions a peaceful, stable, and democratic Pakistan where issues and conflicts are addressed through legitimate and peaceful means under a democratic constitutional order. We see a Pakistan that embraces diversity as a social and political good. A democratic and inclusive Pakistan would help achieve lasting peace, stability, security, and prosperity for its people, and the larger world.

The Institute is committed to promoting democratic means as the top preference for the resolution of conflicts in Pakistan. The objective is to contribute to peaceful resolution of issues and conflicts that impact the country’s security and political stability. An effective solution to an issue must come out of a thorough research and analyses in a proper context. The Institute aims to offer a research- and evidence-based understanding of important political and security issues and disseminate policy recommendations to the stakeholders in the government, media, civil society, private sector, etc.
